How To Measure Advice
THE TILE SOURCE Tips and Hints to Measuring Walls & Floors

General
Accurate measurements are very important to ensure you have sufficient tiles all from one batch and if using a tiling contractor the aim is to avoid expensive downtime whilst waiting for more tiles. The general principle of measuring for tiles is to measure the whole area and deduct the areas that aren’t to be tiled from the total, such as, doors, windows, and baths. Using Metric measurements a quantity surveyor would use a similar system of calculation.

Wall Tile Measuring Example
Below is a basic example of calculating the square area of wall tiles, in this case a bathroom.

how to measure

An area not shown on the above diagram is the window reveal. In this example we will say that the window reveal measures 0.17 m deep. We set out the calculations as follows:
Area
2x(1.4x0.17) = 0.42
2x(2.24x0.17) = 0.76
2x(3.4x2.4) = 16.32
2x(2.6x2.4) = 12.48

Total 29.98m2
Deductions
2.28x1 =2.28
0.6x0.9 = 0.54
1.98x0.6 = 1.18
2.24x1.24 = 2.77

Total 6.77m2
Linear Border
2x3.4 = 6.8
2x2.6 = 5.2

Total Border
12 m
(linear)

Area Required
29.98 - 6.77
= 23.21m2

Floor Tile Measuring Example

5.9x1.7 = 10.03

1.8x1.6 = 2.88

N/A
These calculations are the net areas, wastage needs to be added. The wastage factor varies, the bigger the tile the bigger the waste, and the smaller the area the bigger the waste. With an average size tile with an average area adding 10% for waste is normal.
